Contact Lenses Versus Eyeglasses – Advantages And Disadvantages

by admin on 29/12/2011

When it comes to selecting contact lenses versus eyeglasses, it’s up to the particular individual’s desires while they weigh the benefits and disadvantages to both contact lenses wear and eyeglasses. Both contact lenses and eyeglasses have advantages and disadvantages, and each patient will weigh those options carefully, with or without the help of a physician or Optician, to make their decision.

Advantages to wearing Eyeglasses over Contact Lenses

  • Cleaner to the eyeball, less likelihood of infection from not cleaning hands and contacts properly
  • Requires less maintenance
  • Potential for damage less than wearing contact lenses
  • Less likely to gain corneal damage
  • Can typically cost less than contacts over time
  • Eyeglasses don’t get stuck in the eyes, no trouble taking them off or putting on

Advantages to wearing Contact Lenses over Eyeglasses

  • Great for sports (can wear safety glasses/shields if needed over contacts)
  • Less peripheral distortion
  • Overnight wear with many brands
  • No irritating nose pads imprinting the face
  • More compact
  • Provides more hidden vision correction versus eyeglasses which are always obvious

According to data only from my experiences working with patients with presbyopia, most like to use eyeglasses over contact lenses because many state poorer vision in bifocal or multi-focal contact lenses. Either these patients choose eyeglasses or opt for monovision contact lens.
