What Are Bifocals?

by admin on 28/12/2011

Bifocals, or bifocal lenses, are lenses made with two fields of vision, or in other words, different magnifications in two parts of the lenses. A bifocal lens contains a distance prescription and a near vision prescription all in one, with he near vision segment located at the bottom, more nasal portion of the lenses.

Bifocal lenses are prescribed for patients who are presbyopic, or have trouble focusing on objects at a reading, or near, distance from their eyes. These patients generally push books, words, small objects away from their eyes to see them better, and patients who wear bifocals mostly begin doing so going into their 40s and 50s age wise.
